MIN Lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has established a research collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. to advance manufacturing technologies and address real-world challenges in modern manufacturing.
The collaboration brings together MIN Lab’s expertise in machining, manufacturing science, advanced analysis, and smart manufacturing with Mitsubishi Electric’s expertise in factory automation, manufacturing equipment, industrial data, and technology implementation. Through joint research and technology validation, the teams aim to translate emerging manufacturing research into practical solutions that can be implemented in industrial environments.
The collaboration began through discussions facilitated by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and its J-Bridge open innovation program. Following initial discussions in 2024 and a Mitsubishi Electric team visit to UW–Madison in 2025, the relationship developed into a formal technology collaboration.
The partnership will initially focus on advancing ongoing research toward practical implementation, with the longer-term goal of developing and deploying technologies that address manufacturing challenges in the U.S. and globally.
The collaboration was recently highlighted by JETRO as an example of international open innovation and university–industry partnership.
