A systematic method to assess energy consumption of machine tools for comparable analysis of data and to accurately evaluate the energy efficiency of various machine tools is necessary with increasing interests in green manufacturing. This paper proposes a novel and coherent methodology by presenting a detailed description of different test procedures based on standardized workpieces. The methodology was successfully applied to nine machining centers. Energy consumption characteristics of the studied machine tools are compared and the potential of using the obtained data for energy labeling of machine tools is discussed.
